Make Your Software Catalog More Extensible with Custom Service Properties
OpsLevel enables teams to track and surface a lot of data… like a lot. And while that is crucial for having complete visibility into your services, not everything is a top priority.
To address this, OpsLevel launched a new feature, Custom Service Properties that lets you effectively track service metadata in a typesafe way. This allows teams to focus the information that they need the most.
You can use Custom Service Properties throughout your Catalog, including in Checks and Filters. Supported property types include strings, numbers, booleans, integers, objects, and arrays. Once you’ve created your Custom Service Properties, OpsLevel will automatically validate them for you.
You can also generate reports through both the API and the frontend if there are issues, such as a required field being missing or the populated data not being formatted correctly.
Custom Service Properties can be populated via the OpsLevel uI, API, or using YAML files (if populated with YAML, editing via UI and API will be locked).
Here are some ideas to help get you started:
- PII usage or access
- Regulatory compliance requirements
- Environments and regions where a service is deployed
- Service URL, or other info on whether a service is public-facing
